Fertility Acupuncture and Women’s Health

Empowering women to feel their best through every stage of life by balancing cycles, supporting healthy pregnancies, and guiding them through birth, postpartum recovery, and beyond. Together, we navigate the emotional and physical transitions of womanhood from painful periods through to menopause.

Why Acupuncture for Fertility?

Women's and men's health are among the clinic's main treatment areas. Josh is a degree-level classical acupuncturist who has undertaken specialist training in fertility and is a proud member of the Acupuncture Fertility Network. His expertise allows him to support individuals and couples in their journey toward optimal reproductive health.

Acupuncture has been widely used for its research-based impact on fertility and reproductive wellness. Studies have shown its ability to enhance natural conception, improve IVF success rates, support breech baby repositioning, and much more. This growing body of evidence is why many IVF clinics, midwives, and medical professionals recommend acupuncture as a complementary therapy.

So, how do we help?

Gynaecology

Acupuncture can provide relief from common gynaecological concerns, such as irregular cycles, painful periods, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and hormonal imbalances.

Natural Fertility and IVF

For those trying to conceive naturally or undergoing assisted reproductive treatments like IVF or IUI, acupuncture offers significant benefits.

Obstetrics

Acupuncture provides essential support throughout pregnancy, helping to alleviate nausea, fatigue, back pain, and anxiety while promoting overall wellbeing for mum and child.

Menopause

Menopause is a significant transition, often accompanied by symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and insomnia.

Treating the Whole Person

Acupuncture is a powerful treatment that supports the overall person. There are always going to be two aspects to every treatment:

  1. Symptoms: In the case of fertility this often includes working with the cycles, regulating them, and improving things.

  2. The root of the problem: Understanding the overall person, what the health is like, and treating them as a whole.

This is important because few people are in perfect health. There are always additional things going on that we can understand from a Chinese Medicine lens, and often, they're correlated with others. These may include:

  • Headaches & Migraines

  • Digestive Issues (IBS, bloating, acid reflux)

  • Thyroid Disorders (Hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's, Hyperthyroidism)

  • Urinary Dysfunction

  • Complex & Chronic Pain

Acupuncture and IVF Research

Acupuncture is recognised for its role in supporting IVF. This can be explained by many reasons, such as the fact that it promotes blood flow to the uterus. By incorporating acupuncture into an IVF cycle, patients may experience better overall outcomes and a greater sense of balance. Here are two examples:

  • A 2023 meta-analysis demonstrated how Acupuncture can improve ovarian reserves (AMH), hormone balance (FSH and LH) and Antral Follicle Count.

  • A recent meta-analysis found that acupuncture can significantly improve in vitro fertilization (IVF) success rates. The study analysed data from 25 high-quality randomized controlled trials with a total of 4,757 participants and concluded that acupuncture increases IVF live birth rates by an impressive 33.8%.

Acupuncture for Supporting the Journey of Womanhood

One of acupuncture's most powerful aspects is its continuous support throughout life. In Chinese Medicine, the character Zhong represents balance and centrality, a philosophy at the heart of Josh's practice.

Acupuncture is more about treating the person and preventing illness before it arises than curing illnesses. That's where many patients come with an initial concern only to continue treatments to maintain health. Having a central place to go to throughout pregnancy, recovery, and beyond.

Acupuncture's Role in Emotional Support

Fertility challenges, whether conceiving naturally or undergoing IVF, can be an emotional rollercoaster. Sometimes, the highs and lows can be overwhelming. Finding a practitioner who listens, understands and provides guidance is key. Acupuncture can be a safe space where emotions can be expressed freely, and it can be a space where you feel supported.

Sometimes, the hardest part is saying how you feel or dealing with the uncertainty of not knowing what to expect or what comes next.

The clinic can become a place where you can shed a few tears, release tension, or find a sense of calm amid uncertainty. Acupuncture helps the physical, mental and spiritual.

Life’s Cycles in Acupuncture

In the first chapter of our classical textbooks, the ancient Chinese doctors discussed the development cycle of both men and women. Men went through a series of 8 year cycles and women went through 7 (explains why we often say that women mature more quickly then men do). There are various stages of these described cycle which are important including the timespan where periods come, where women have greater fertility chances and then also when modern-day menopause is more likely to start.

Acupuncture is well placed to support people at each stage of their development cycle based on helping the body when it needs it the most. Women's health and fertility is one of the most common things that we tend to treat in clinic based on the amazing results we often get.
